US Army is deploying Microsoft HoloLens-based headsets in a $21.88 billion deal

 Microsoft and the US Army also revealed that HoloLens 2 virtual reality goggles will go into production, taking a project that has been in progress since 2018 to life. According to a CNBC story, the current contract is considerably bigger than the previous one, covering 120,000 headsets. Over the span of ten years, the deal could be worth up to $21.88 billion.

The hardware resembles the HoloLens 2 but is more ruggedized and has additional customizations for smartphone connectivity (and extra sensors like thermal and night vision). The $3,500 HoloLens 2 is a business-focused augmented reality system that layers 3D hologram-like augmented reality overlays onto the physical world and uses hand and eye-tracking to communicate with applications and objects. It will attach to accessories via 5G.

According to Kipman, Microsoft has been collaborating with the US Army for two years to build a "soldier-centered" concept for the prototype. "The equipment and skills required to accomplish their goal" would be provided by the headset.
